The changes of the concept of love in poetry through time

Love in literature

After years spent speaking with couples before, during and after marriage; and of talking to parents and children struggling with their relationships, I am convinced of the partiality of the definition. Love should be seen not as a feeling but as an enacted emotion.

To love is to feel and act lovingly. Too many women have told me, bruises visible on their faces, that the husbands who struck them love them.

We Are Defining Love the Wrong Way

Since they see love as a feeling, the word hides the truth, which is that you do not love someone whom you repeatedly beat and abuse. You may have very strong feelings about them, you may even believe you cannot live without them, but you do not love them.

The first love mentioned in the Bible is not romantic love, but parental love Genesis 22.

  • More important is whether it matters inside the poetry what Laura — or the fair angel, or the Beloved — was like, or what she felt, or whether she bore children or grew old;
  • Does Novalis betray her memory in his poetry, having her disembodied spirit appear to him at her graveside?

Between human beings, love is a relational word. Yes, you can love things that do not love you back—the sky or a mountain or a painting or the game of chess.

But the love of other people is directional.

And real love is not only about the feelings of the lover; it is not egotism. It is when one person believes in another person and shows it.

  • That's a real chamber, with boards underfoot, not a symbolic mind-space under a green laurel tree lauro, Laura;
  • Between human beings, love is a relational word;
  • Novalis asks her to write to him, but her letters are forced and dutiful;
  • They even had a commune, Brook Farm.

In Fiddler on the Roof, when Tevye asks Golde whether she loves him after a quarter century of marriage, her wry answer is exactly on point: Love is not about being hired help. Love is not an obligation done with a cold soul.

Not only Sophie died, but also Novalis's brothers and sisters, one after another, in their teens and twenties — and then the poet himself, of tuberculosis, less than a year after the publication of his Hymns.
  2. That group went on to launch psychedelic rock and the cultural revolution of the late 1960s.
  3. Three concepts stood above all others.
  4. The Greeks developed nearly all of the classic forms that formed the underpinnings of later literature, drama, music and poetry, including the ode, epic, lyric, tragedy, and comedy. From that moment of encounter in Avignon anyway — whether mythic or actual - flowed the inspiration for the Rime Sparse, written over the next quarter of a century.

But neither is it a passion that expresses itself in cruelty, or one that does not express itself at all. The feeling must be wedded to the deed.

We would have a healthier conception of love if we understood that love, like parenting or friendship, is a feeling that expresses itself in action. What we really feel is reflected in what we do.

  • But in novels, love's dreaming has consequences, it has to co-exist inside a book's whole length with change and accidents and the sheer difficulty of mutuality and sometimes, depending on the novelist, with disillusion, contempt, parody — irony may be allowed a freer rein than in Tolstoy;
  • For many centuries, poetry movements and communities have served as the most provocative, creative, vital, engaging, and oft-underground elements of regional and national literary trends;
