Dalloway came out in a gap of three years; the former came out in 1922 and the latter in 1925. The relation between these two books has since been the subject matter of much notorious critical contention, the heart of the matter being the assumption or the conjecture that though Ms. Woolf showed much apathy towards Ulysses, her own novel was greatly influenced by it in terms of style, narrative technique and structure. Dalloway too stands out in itself as quite an impressive, complex and compelling work of modernism, crucial in its achievements through the experiments in the stream of consciousness technique.

And indeed, this can under no circumstance be stated as an understatement. Ulysses, by all means and every aspect is a colossal achievement in the history of English literature; one may tarry from it, show disgust or even contempt for it, but one simply cannot escape or deny it.

Dalloway takes place on a single day, Wednesday, 13 June, 1923. It follows Clarissa Dalloway from early morning through to night of a London day on which she gives a large formal party. The novel follows a set of characters as they go about their lives on a normal day. Words not only stand for their referents: This is, of course, a wholly visual device, but one cannot help but wonder whether some of the seeming onomatopoeia of Ulysses is not also addressed primarily to the eye.

Joyce is pursuing a method which others must pursue after him. They will not be imitators, any more than the scientist who uses the discoveries of an Einstein in pursuing his own, independent, further investigations. I doubt that such influence can ever be asserted or established by scientific method.
